WRD Fisheries Biologist John Damer recently captured this cool video of brook trout spawning activity in a north Georgia stream. Watch closely and you'll see the female trout turn on her side and fan the sediment with her caudal fin. This is how she creates the large depression in the gravel (called a “redd”) where she'll deposit her eggs. The male stays close-by until he chases away a smaller male trying to take his place.
